The Media Man Reviews The Endgame Saga by Mixedfan8643 The Media Man Reviews The Endgame Saga by Mixedfan8643
I am the Media Man
I come from not so far away
And I review
What can you review?
I review comics…

I don’t wanna review this! I really don’t wanna review this! But no, I’ve got to review this otherwise I’m gonna get fired and the Media Man will no longer be on DeviantArt. So I’ve got to review this crap. Get ready people for I am about to review the overrated abomination to Sonic kind that is…ENDGAME!!!

So what is Endgame and why do I hate it? Well you’ll see why I hate it in the review. Endgame is a big saga and one of the comic’s most infamous stories. Well it used to be the number one infamous story until Ian Flynn came along with his bigger and MUCH better story arc in issues 230-onwards. The story was written by Ken Penders and a few other writers such as Mike Gallagher and Kent Taylor and…it’s pretty damn bad and yet people hold it in high-regard. Well what do you expect? It’s Ken Penders for crying out loud! He can’t write a story for crap! Well that’s just my opinion, if you love Ken Penders’ writing for the comics then fine for you. Enjoy his horribly written trash as much as you like. I however, can’t stand the asshole, especially as he’s filing stupid lawsuits that he cannot win! Before we get to the review of Endgame here’s some back story. The build-up to Endgame really began in issue 46 which was a snore-fest of stupid accusations and went nowhere. Now as Ken was writing Endgame he planned to kill off Sally Acorn and Dr. Robotnik as he felt the comic wouldn’t go on for much longer. Yeah look at the comic’s place in the Guinness Book of World Records Ken and realize how much of a goof-up you could have made here! His reason for killing Sally is stupid and was met with angry complaints from Sally’s stupid fan base and even SEGA weren’t pleased with this. SEGA forced Ken to change the story and have Sally live. I wish Ken got to go with his original idea as Sally being killed will be satisfying for me although Ken needed a more legitimate reason to kill off Sally. The near-death of Sally Acorn is the ONLY reason that Endgame is well-remembered. People don’t remember it for anything else. So is Endgame really that good? Nope. Does it hold up? Let’s find out for I’m the Media Man and this is my review of the Sonic the Hedgehog: Endgame saga…

Issue 47: Issue 47 actually opens the saga up pretty strongly but opening the saga up strongly does not a good saga make. Hell this is how I view this thing, Ken decided to give Endgame a strong opening just to rake in readers and then he didn’t care about the rest and knew that people would only read it just to find out what happened to Sally. You shouldn’t read a story-arc just for one character; you should read it for everybody else! The story starts off with the Freedom Fighters in Robotropolis (why they’re here is anyone’s guess. Their mission is not exactly clear) and Sonic and Sally climb up Robotnik’s headquarters to…do something. Like I said, the mission isn’t exactly clear. I do hate this line that Sally says as Sonic runs up the grappling hook. He says “Hang on Sal!” and Sally asks “Have I any choice?” That line is unnecessary and it’s a crowning example of how poor Ken Pender’s dialogue is. As well as the Freedom Fighters, we have the Wolf Pack here too and Drago Wolf makes no attempt to hide the fact he’s obviously going to be a villain. Ken’s as subtle as a nuclear explosion in the middle of a minefield! Also we have contrived moment number 1: Dr. Quack. He’s randomly here with the Freedom Fighters even though in every mission they’ve been on, they’ve never needed Dr. Quack with them so his whole presence feels forced and unnecessary. Oh and how convenient is it that Dr. Quack ends up being part of the whole thing later? Shows how contrived this stupid thing is! Anyway, up on the building, Sally has a random flashback which shows us that her father’s impossibly back to normal and he’s very suspicious of Sonic for some reason. And she’s not suspicious about the whole thing because…? Good grief, I have a feeling this might become an idiot plot now! Sally snaps back to reality and she starts climbing down the building, even though there’s no reason for her to be doing so, while Sonic goes in the building. Dr. Robotnik then unleashes some wall-mounted guns and they start shooting at Sally. Or at least they SHOULD be but in the page you can clearly see they’re firing at random and not even attempting to hit her. Pretty poor aiming guns! Rotor destroys them with his BFG but Sally’s still hanging on the rope for dear life. She wouldn’t even be in this position if she just went with Sonic the big idiot. Why is Sally leader of the Freedom Fighters again?! Anyhow, Sonic suddenly shows up (and the reader notices he hasn’t got his backpack on, destroying any chance of getting us to believe he was really doing this) and cuts Sally’s rope. Sally, with a dull expression, falls to her not-death and the Freedom Fighters move in. We get page 10 which is confusing as hell and isn’t very clear on what happens. The Wolf Pack moves in to distract the SWAT-bots while the Freedom Fighters get Sally and Drago Wolf gives us a stupid line “Don’t you know the one with the hottest toys wins?” as he uses a flamethrower on the SWAT-bots. While that’s going on, Sally is escorted out of the city while Sonic tries to catch Robotnik and he misses him. The Freedom Fighters go back to Knothole and shortly afterwards, Sally is announced to be dead. If only that were true. Sonic arrives back at Knothole and he is immediately arrested by Geoffrey St. John and put on trial in the morning. Before the trial though, we have a scene with Drago Wolf meeting his girlfriend Hershey the Cat, or as I like to call her Plot-device the Cat or Hershey the Driving-Force-Of-This-Story or maybe even Chekov’s Cat. Seriously, she’s the reason this moronic story happens! And she’s never been in the comics before so she just randomly appears like a gun on the wall in a play and she ends up being “fired” later in the act. Poor writing there Ken! Anyways, the next morning Sonic is put on trial and sentenced to life in Devil’s Gulag. And still, nobody realizes what’s up with the king. And this is how the story starts. Despite some stupid moments it is a good start but the story falls apart as it goes along. Just see as I go through this will ya?

Issue 48: In this one, Sonic is shipped off to Devil’s Gulag but SWAT-bots stupidly attack the plane and make it crash, allowing Sonic to escape and run off into a cave to hide from everybody. We get some unnecessary narrations during this too. This is a comic book Ken, not a full length novel like A Christmas Carol! There shouldn’t be narrations in a comic book! While all this goes on, Dr. Robotnik takes over Knothole and reveals King Max is a fake (no surprises there). Don’t worry guys, this plot goes nowhere and ends up being pointless in the grand scheme of things. Also we have Bunnie and Antoine spying on Drago Wolf and then getting captured and for some reason; they get shipped off to Downunda, leading to ANOTHER pointless subplot! Except a lot of those guys for Endgame is full of this crap! Meanwhile, Sonic is found by Geoffrey St. John, who found Sonic with contrived moment number 2: a tracker in his shackles. There’s no reason for it to be here, it’s just there to hurry the plot along and help Geoffrey find Sonic impossibly fast. Sonic and Geoffrey fight each other and Sonic escapes by leaping off of a waterfall. This issue is not bad but it just leads up to more stupid crap that makes this saga really bad.

Issue 49: This issue is where the plot begins to fall apart. Sonic falls down the waterfall and he saves himself with a dirt-track he makes. I’m not kidding, this literally happens! Sonic gets some dirt out of his shoe, throws it into the air, makes a arched bridge in mid-air and runs across it. THAT IS THE EPITOME OF IMPOSSIBLE! Not to mention there’s a plethora of plot-holes that happen because of this! One of them being Sonic’s running across a dirt-track in mid-air even though he said in an earlier panel HIS LEGS WERE CRAMPING UP!!! If Sonic’s legs were cramping up then he can’t do that! You can’t run if you have cramp legs! This just proves that Ken suffers from a short attention span! At least Ian pays attention to what he’s doing! So Sonic gets away after doing the impossible and we get some stupid revelations. Dr. Quack’s family have been captured and he was part of the whole thing this whole time. I don’t buy it at all. Also you will notice in this page that Dr. Quack’s family look pretty damn calm despite being locked in a cage and the bars are so wide apart they can easily squeeze through them! But there’s another door to stop that from happening so no harm there. The art sucks just like the story does. Also we get the crowning moment of stupid right here when it’s revealed that Hershey the Cat was behind the whole near-death of Sally and she was wearing a Sonic costume that made her think she was killing Snively instead. Gobsmacked? Well you should be because all this is…

BULLCRAP!!!!

There’s a million plot holes with this stupid revelation! Why was Hershey wearing a Sonic costume? Why was she in Robotropolis? How did the eyes and mouth on the costume change positions? How can you make a costume with eyes that make you only see Snively?! And most of all, how can she look like Sonic in the costume when Sonic is short and stubby and she is long and slender and very feminine looking?!?! That costume shouldn’t have fooled anybody and Hershey was unnecessary and unneeded in this scenario! The even BETTER revelation would have been the fake Sonic turned out to be an Automaton, NOT SOME STUPID PLOT DEVICE CHARACTER IN A COSTUME!!!! Is it really bad how I’m merely a fanfic writer and yet I can do better then this?! Hell, I should remake Endgame in fanfic form and fix all these stupid problems! But I digress. Also you may notice that this story gets overloaded with plots here. Here’s the full list:

1: Sonic’s on the run from Geoffrey St. John.
2: Bunnie and Antoine are imprisoned in Downunda.
3: Hershey the Cat. (Just that. Hershey in herself is a subplot)
4: Dr. Quack has a dilemma of his own.
5: Dr. Robotnik has taken over Knothole.
6: Dr. Robotnik has a plan he’s going to unleash.

They should have just called this story “Random crap happening with no rhyme or reason!”! None of these subplots have a reason for happening, they just do. And they all end up making plot holes in one way or another. That’s the big problem with Endgame, it’s too self-contained for its own good and it really suffers at the end. Anyway, later on Sonic calls Dulcy the Dragon and reveals the truth to him. Dulcy apparently can sense the truth or some BS like that. I don’t buy it, it’s a power she’s never had before and all of the sudden, she has it and it’s just there to help clear Sonic’s name. Shows how contrived this stupid thing is. Dulcy then flies Sonic off to Angel Island where she gets knocked out by Knuckles and Geoffrey St. John catches up to them. Don’t worry Knuckles ends up being pointless and unnecessary in the grand scheme of things.

Issue 50: Finally, we reach the end of this moronic story. Sonic has a brief tussle with the Chaotix before Dulcy clears things up and they fly off back to Knothole. Despite being in Downunda, they get back pretty damn fast too. Also Bunnie and Antoine somehow are in Robotropolis when they should be in the Downunda prison camp. This is what I mean about this story being too big for its own good, issue 50 was severely edited and as a result, we have some scenes that could have been helpful missing and the whole thing feels rushed and unfinished! Well done Ken Penders, you’ve produced the Sonic version of Countdown to Final Crisis! I know we get a director’s cut that clears things up for us but the fact we NEEDED one in the first place is not acceptable! And it doesn’t make the story any better ethier! Fixing one plot hole does not fix a bad story guys! Anyway, we get some really crazy scenes with Sonic in Robotropolis and the action here isn’t exciting or gripping, just crazy. Oh and we get the WORST line you’ll ever read in a Sonic comic. “Ooooh…the heel bone’s connected to the chest bone!” Sonic says this as he kicks Snively in the chest, causing Snively to yell “Ow! You hurt my sternum!” WHAT IS THE FLIPPIN’ POINT OF THOSE HORRIBLE LINES?!?!?! After that, Sonic fights Dr. Robotnik as he prepares to fire his weapon, the Ultimate Annihilator, on Knothole. The fight ends up with Robotnik getting killed by his own weapon (thanks to Snively although there’s no evidence to support this) and Sonic is taken back to Knothole. Sonic’s given the rundown on what’s happened and we find out that Sally’s alive, just in a memorial case that’s somehow healing her (just go with it, it’ll make your life easier.). Sonic goes over to Sally and wakes her up with a kiss ala Snow White. And you dorks think Ian Flynn’s unoriginal, Ken ripped off goddamn Snow White for crying out loud! And for some reason Sally wakes up and wonders what Sonic said when her reaction should be “WHY THE HELL DID YOU TRY TO KILL ME YOU B*****D?!” Or did Sally just magically forget about that? It’s a Ken Penders story, everybody has to be an idiot in one. And the story ends with the two happily embracing each other.

So that’s Endgame for you? What do I think? THIS IS ONE OF THE WORST SONIC STORIES I’VE EVER READ!!! The story is too big for its own good, subplots happen for no reason, the characters are idiots, plot devices or just flat out not interesting, the dialogue is disgusting and the artwork ranges from good to bad to downright terrible! I hate Endgame and I have no shame in it! This whole thing was a stupid, contrived, ludicrous moment that has no impact on the story and as a result, comes off as a roller-coaster ride that nobody asked for! I’d rather read Ian Flynn’s weakest works then this trash! Hey, at least Ian knows how to write a story! And since I’m not finished with this, join me next time as I give you a list related to this! Next time on the Media Man, I shall count down the top 15 WORST moments of Endgame! I shall see you then guys…

Overall score for the arc: 2.9/10

Mixedfan8643’s real thoughts: Seriously guys, Endgame was just…bad. Just…bad. Even Ian Flynn’s weakest works are better than this garbage.

I didn't see this. (Sighs) It's been a long time since I've seen the comics on YouTube, but I'll try to explain my point of view. You mean well, but I think it's arrogant and troll-like to assume you are absolutely in the right. And with profanity no less. We're there some plot holes? Yes, but Archie makes comics for less serious readers than DC or Marvel, so it's only natural that a good deal of mistakes would happen. Not that I don't see your point. I think it would be wiser if entertainment products from comics to games weren't really rushed and that their makers either do their homework or pick out some helpful advisors. If what you say is right, Penders didn't really practice for this moment. Of course, I don't blame him for wanting to wrap the series up, especially with the future problems it would have. I do blame, however, for that stupid lawsuit of his that rebooted the comics and prevents a new Chronicles game. But what you must understand is that the saga was made in an older different time from present day, that you shouldn't call your remake attempt more better simply because you can't stand the original as it would make you more arrogant, and that while it is important to notice the bad stuff and advice against for future reference you should note and salvage what good parts there are. I thought the final battle in Endgame was epic, that Hershey was able to make Geoffrey a little more bearable over time until her death that will never be explained unfortunately, and I think a similar, yet differentiated, premise can work for a Chronicles. I appreciate that you noticed what I didn't notice at first, and that you tried to correct those mistakes, but simply removing them and saying that your story is completely better won't solve anything and will only mark your image in an arrogant fashion. Instead of trying to remove a good chunk of the story, you should simply modify it to reach a compromise that those who disagree with this review might like. I'm sorry if I sounded harsh, but I'm trying to hold your horses so to speak. I recently started a forum and community on Fanfiction.net where I want to discuss and hold alternate path ways and such that the Sonic verses could've taken and may yet take. And after my first story, I thought it be more beneficial if people who haven't heard the first thing about Sonic or Mario for examples would be given some basic ideas of what's what and who's who, if you know what I mean. I'm not really a big of the comics, but if I ever did decide to do a remake, I'd gather what material knowledge I could find, fill in a few things I couldn't find, and describe it all as best I could. Right now, my community only includes a Sonic Chronicles 2 story I've been checking for some time, but play your cards right, and there will be some room for your Sonic Archie stories. Apologies again, if I spoke out of turn.

I hardly think I'm "arrogant" for improving Endgame after what a complete mess the original story was...and your points don't excuse how bad it is. It's still bad no matter what you say.

And as for the review, calm down about it. My opinions in the review were mostly exaggerated in it.

You may be seen as arrogant for saying your Endgame is better, period. I admit to its faults, but completely changing it doesn't usually solve anything. Besides this is all boiling down on opinions as I'm sure it always does. I have been thinking on what if the costume was replaced with a shape shifting device, but it's affected electronically or whatever to make Hershey think it was Snively who she thought was planning something disastrously big enough that he couldn't be left alive and Drago offered her the device to make her look like a hero without getting too much attention. Unaware that she was being lied to. Not that Drago turning good wouldn't have been a bad idea and I actually think Metal Sonic can just as easily frame Sonic and tamper with the special weapon as easily as it was done elsewhere. All I'm saying, is that you made a good try, but I feel that something less arrogant in summary and more explainable in story would be more suited. Just live and learn as Crush 40 taught us.

That some people are quick to judge and prefer stories that don't even describe anything as much as an actually novel does? I'm just trying give helpful advice in a reasonable manner.

In your opinion, yes? I know you don't want to think yourself flawed, I feel something similar about myself, but you should be cautious about what you say. I tried to think of myself the genius on my first times on wiki and Facebook, and all I did was make myself look troublesome. Here's my forum, if you're interested. Just take a moment to ponder.

:iconfacepalmplz: Oh god it really is Snow White...just look at the class coffin Sally was in, it looks just like the one from Snow White flowers and all!

Really the only thing I liked about ENDGAME was the SonSal moment at the end, more specifically Sonic's rather sweet line. "It's nothing Sal, you look good."

And that's 'bout it. And I agree about Dulcy too, they just pull her our of their ass when they need her for...plot-y things Or in the case of Dragon's Lair (or whatever) to pointlessly talk about domestic abuse...:icondoublefacepalmplz:

And did you notice she wasn't really introduced when she first appeared? She just...exists all of a sudden, like in SatAM. Now I like SatAM and the early issues were okay but you you don't just poof characters into the series with no explanation!

It tears major holes in the plot! Especially if the character is never used or disappear for extended periods of time.

W-wow. Dude, i can now see why you, Sonic, and his friends hate Ken so much. As i was reading this, i imagined myself reading each issue you said. Everything that you said, i agree 100%. This saga sucks! The two things that really made me scream was when Sonic made a dirt track in mid-air and ran across it even though he said his legs were cramped up! THAT IS COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE!!! This "Saga" is the worst! I'd rather read issues 150-151 than this crap!

How the hell can that dragon can tell when someone is lying or telling the truth, how can anyone at instant believes her and how can we know she could just be lying (which would not happen base on her character) but I'm just thinking logical on this and they could do test on her ability as a lie detector.

When the Freedom Fighters were getting Sally back to Knothole and the Wolf Pack fight the SWATbots. Antoine wishes he stayed behind to fight the SWATbots and Rotor tells him "Who would fly the plane?" I don't know, Rotor. Maybe someone who's orange (or is he brown here) and has two tails? Or am I just nitpicking?

Knowing Penders, he ONLY likes his characters I bet, particularly since when he took the writer's seat for the Sonic comic, he was only in it for his kids. Further proving that Ian Flynn is the only writer for the comic who's any good since unlike the previous writers, Ian Flynn's had experience with Sonic the Hedgehog and is a fan of the franchise so he knows what he's writing about.

I felt like you forgot the most crucial point of this entire arc. Out of no where Dulcy was giving the ability of a human lie detector because dragon's don't lie somehow. That being said Dulcy was present in the endgame arc so when everyone was arguing who the traitor was with Geoffrey saying its Uncle Chuck and Sonic and Antoine saying its Geoffrey and Lupe questioning Drago, couldn't she have you this VERY useful power to solve this crisis before ANY off this transpired. Hell she could have gone on a one on one discussion with everyone to determine who was on the up and up.

Did anyone else notice this or was it just me?

I didn't forget "Dulcy the Lie Detector", I even brought it up in the review.

But yeah, you have a point. If Dulcy can't lie then why didn't they use her to question everybody in Issue 46 and therefore, Dulcy could work out who the traitor was and stop all this nonsense from happening? Oh yeah, because Ken Penders can't write, forget I asked.

Thanks for pointing that out for me pal. I didn't notice that at first.

Here's another time I think "Dulcy the Lie Detector" would have been useful, the Mecha Madness arc. Sonic's "treason" in that arc would have been resolved instantly. Does that make Gallagher is better than Penders?

So you hate Endgame too? Glad I'm not the only one. Endgame had a lot of build-up for a piss-poor pay off and the sad thing is, it could have been good but Penders' incompetence as a writer shows that even good ideas can go bad.

So what do you hate the most about Endgame then?

I imagine Scurvy's reaction to these horrible issues is to bury them and never read them again...

Well, like I said. I hate it because it feels like a waste of issues. And the way Sally came back to life so to speak. Snowhite rip-off. I mean, come on. It would have made more sense if she was in a coma for a few issues, like Sonic visiting her, and after maybe 10 issues or so, she would wake up. And..ugh...There are too many reasons that I don't like it to list it up here..

Indeed it is.

Yeah, Endgame was just a moment much like DC's Countdown to Final Crisis. Hence why I keep saying that the Mecha Sally arc is Endgame done right, because it's more than just a moment and it actually has an impact on the stoy. Endgame just sort of came and went and the only thing that came out of it was Robotnik Prime being gone. And yeah, Sally's revival was a Snow White rip-off and an insult to the reader's intelligence. Ken Penders sucks!!!

You should see my Top 15 WORST Moments of Endgame list, I go into more detail why it sucks and what's bad about it.

Have to agree with you there. And, the fact that Mecha Sally arc has an impact on the story. I mean, we can clearly see that this arc changes things, its not just a story, that will end up with status quo. Much like The batman Arc Death in the family, where the Joker kills the second Robin Jason Todd, or Knightfall. Things changes after those arcs, not just going back to status quo.

Maybe I will check it out later today ;)

Indeed. I can't stand stories that stick to the status quo like Spongebob Squarepants and The Simpsons, you just DO NOT keep the status quo. That is boring, tedious and makes the show less enjoyable to watch and also kills story potential and character development. By the way, I've read Knightfall and I loved it...;)

Cool. You'll love it. Promise.

Yeah, altough I have no problem with it in the simpsons, seeing as I feel it works there, but for stories with heroes like Batman, Sonic ETC ETC, I feel Status quo is boring.

Cool to hear that you liked it.

Yeah. I agree. Stories about heroes and villains should NEVER keep the status quo.

Yeah, Knightfall is one of the best non-Sonic comic stories I've ever read and I haven't even read ALL of it yet, just the first half. I have a graphic novel collection of the first part up until Batman getting his back broken and I'm looking for the other half of it I can finish it.

I'm gonna say this, I don't find the Sonic suit Hershey was in to be unimaginable. We're in a world where a flip of a switch can turn a living breathing being into a robot, I think I can buy a suit making the wearer look exactly like Sonic and making whoever they see look like Snively. Mind you, it's still over convoluted and I still question why she was in it in the first place, but the suit itself is feasible, at least in this world.

To the Dulcy thing, I don't particularly mind the idea of Dulcy pulling the fact that Dragons can't lie out right then and there, but what does bother me is the fact that when she says Sonic is innocent, everyone believes her because, y'know, dragons can't lie. That's just kinda a hard pill to swallow, just everyone accepting the idea that Dragon's can't lie. Them not being able to lie is fine, but... normally, some people wouldn't believe such a word. At least some people wouldn't.

I can understand "the heel bone’s connected to the chest bone!” because Sonic's kicking Snively in the chest, but "You hurt my sternum!”? That's just stupid.

All and all, aside what I noted right here, this is pretty much my thoughts om the Endgame saga. If you can even call it that. Mind you, still not as bad as 134, but whatever.

OK then, thanks for seeing this list. I stick by my points though but I respect your opinions.

I'm glad you can see how overrated and badly written Endgame is. It truly is horrible.

Endgame is overrated and poorly written. Even the Anti Archie guys know this. Now if only they can see that Ian's writing is better.

I thought about something. That suit makes the wearer only see Snively.

What if there were two people around when he/she was wearing it, wouldn't that make them see two of them? Sounds stupider than advertized.
